When Your Nervous System Speaks in Symptoms

Functional Neurological Disorder — sometimes called Conversion Disorder — is a condition where the brain and nervous system struggle to send and receive signals correctly, producing very real, often debilitating neurological symptoms that cannot be explained by structural damage or disease. FND is not "all in your head" in the dismissive sense — it is a genuine disorder of nervous system function, and it deserves genuine treatment.

What Does FND Look Like?

FND can show up in many ways, including:

  • Functional seizures — seizure-like episodes that are not caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain

  • Tremors — involuntary shaking or trembling of the limbs or other parts of the body

  • Involuntary muscle movements or spasms

  • Weakness or paralysis in limbs without a structural cause

  • Difficulty walking or with coordination

  • Speech difficulties, including slurred speech or loss of voice

  • Sensory changes, such as numbness, tingling, or vision disturbances

  • Non-epileptic attacks that mimic epilepsy

These symptoms are real, they can be severe, and they can significantly impact your quality of life.

Who Is at Risk?

FND does not discriminate — it can affect anyone. However, certain factors appear to increase vulnerability:

  • Chronic stress and ongoing nervous system dysregulation

  • Anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety, panic disorder, and health anxiety

  • Trauma and PTSD, including childhood trauma, adverse life events, and medical trauma

  • A history of other medically unexplained symptoms

  • Major life transitions or periods of overwhelm

  • A predisposition toward internalizing stress physically

FND is the nervous system's way of expressing what words and conscious awareness sometimes cannot. It is not weakness. It is not fabrication. It is your body and brain doing the best they can under extraordinary pressure.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help

Hypnotherapy is one of the most promising and evidence-supported treatments for Functional Neurological Disorder. Research shows that clinical hypnotherapy can:

  • Reduce the frequency and severity of functional seizures and movement symptoms

  • Calm a chronically dysregulated nervous system

  • Help the brain and body re-establish healthy signaling patterns

  • Process underlying trauma, stress, and anxiety that may be driving symptoms

  • Improve quality of life and daily functioning

Unlike treatments that only manage symptoms on the surface, hypnotherapy works at the level of the subconscious mind and nervous system — the very place where FND originates. By creating a deeply relaxed, focused state, hypnotherapy allows us to gently interrupt maladaptive patterns and help your nervous system learn a new way of responding.
